OpenOptics MSA Consortium Releases the Industry’s First WDM Specification for Intra Data Center Connectivity

The OpenOptics MSA specification defines 1550nm silicon photonics based QSFP optical transceiver and optical engine solutions for scalable intra data center networks on single mode fiber (SMF) infrastructure

LOS ANGELES, Mar 23, 2015 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- OFC 2015 -- RANOVUS Inc., a leading provider of multi-terabit interconnect solutions for data center and communications networks announces the OpenOptics MSA publication of the industry’s first foundational Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) specification for an interoperable 100G WDM standard for 2 kilometer reach, addressing the challenges with the explosive growth in data center connectivity requirements.

“Our OpenOptics MSA collaboration with industry leaders has resulted in the definition of a foundational WDM specification for data center network connectivity, and having terabit scalability on a single mode fiber pair infrastructure,” said Saeid Aramideh, chief marketing and sales officer for RANOVUS. “The availability of this specification is a major milestone for our industry which we believe will not only accelerate the adoption of silicon-photonics based WDM solutions for the data center market, but also allow for a scalable terabit infrastructure for next generation datacenter architectures.”

The WDM specification brings together 1550nm WDM laser and silicon photonics for QSFP and optical engine based solutions, enabling lowest-cost, highest density, and highest bandwidth with single mode fiber pair connectivity, to enable data centers to use up to 32 or more channels per fiber strand.

“Previously, there was no standard for anything beyond 100Gb/s,” said Gilad Shainer, vice president of marketing at Mellanox Technologies. “Now, the industry will have an architecture standard that scales to a terabit and beyond on existing fiber, substantially reduces the cost of hyperscale data center networks.”

The OpenOptics MSA consortium presented its proposed specification at the OCP U.S. Summit 2015 and announced new additions to its membership. The OpenOptics MSA membership now includes RANOVUS, Mellanox, Oracle, Ciena, Vertilas and Ghiasi Quantum.
The OpenOptics MSA specification summary and a membership application form for interested companies are now available. For additional information, visit the OpenOptics MSA website at www.OpenOpticsMSA.org.

Software Defined Data Centers

Rahi System’s Software-Defined Data Center framework offers a simplified and unified process for deploying cloud-based services in a matter of minutes, replacing processes that used to take weeks or months. It allows businesses operating highly virtualized data centers to easily combine, customize, and commission server, storage, and networking resources through a single, common interface.

Leveraging various cloud operating systems allows data center administrators to deploy virtual machines, assign storage, and configure networks through a single graphical user interface.

Software Defined Data Centers abstract the underlying hardware allowing you to reap the benefits of virtualization on Compute, Storage and Network. The benefit of leveraging Rahi Systems is we have implemented Software Defined Data Center with VMware, RedHat, Citrix and OpenStack, so you don't have to go thru the PitFalls. We can choose the right solution for your environment delivering you the peace of mind.

Benefits of Software-Defined Data Center :

  • Faster provisioning. Infrastructure and data service do not require complex pre-configurations as the right service is created dynamically.

  • Granular dynamic control of service levels across heterogeneous resources. Adjusting service levels to an app is as simple as changing a policy. The underlying service delivery dynamically adjusts accordingly.
  •  Simplified operations and troubleshooting. virtualization eliminates the notion of hard mapping of roles and responsibilities has been eliminated and replaced with automatic enforcement and monitoring of policies.
  •  Flexible resource management. All components are separable. For instance, the data plane could be replaced without disrupting the data services or the control plane.
  •  Agility with control. Infrastructure teams can define classes of services by exposing policy tiers to end-users. Compliance and charge back are simplified.

  • Increased asset utilization. Composed services will be more precise and aligned on application boundaries.
